Unreal Environment Design

A high-fidelity environment built in Unreal Engine showcasing advanced technical art workflows, Procedural Content Generation (PCG), and strong cinematic composition.

Cinematic Composition

Guiding the Viewer's Eye

The primary goal of this environment was to establish a strong visual narrative through meticulous layout design, utilizing classic photography and cinematography techniques.

  • The Golden Ratio: The scene layout strictly follows the Fibonacci spiral (Golden Ratio), naturally drawing the viewer's eye from the foreground statue, across the midground village, and up toward the focal point of the tallest tower.
  • Depth & Scale: Carefully separated the foreground, midground, and background elements using dynamic lighting, atmospheric fog, and contrasting values to create a massive sense of scale.

Procedural Content Generation (PCG)

Scalable Node-Based Instancing

Instead of manually hand-placing thousands of environmental props, I engineered a highly scalable, non-destructive PCG pipeline directly within Unreal Engine.

  • Modular Layering: The PCG graph is cleanly segmented into logic blocks handling Additional Props, Rocks, Grass, and Trees, utilizing Surface Samplers and Transform nodes to apply organic scale and rotation randomization.
  • Spatial Filtering: To prevent mesh clipping, I heavily utilized Difference Binary nodes. For example, the Grass generator automatically removes points from areas where Trees or Rocks have already spawned, creating clean, realistic borders.
  • Self-Pruning: Integrated Bounds Modifiers and Self-Pruning nodes to maintain strict density control, keeping draw calls optimized without sacrificing the dense, lush look of the foliage.
